Stable solution for maintenance of a growing manufacturing site

With a history stretching back over 200 years, Cadbury Schweppes has grown into one of the largest beverage and confectionery companies in the world and its long-established Bournville factory, near Birmingham, continues to play a key role in its business.

Problem

With a very large factory area to look after, including an additional soon-to-be-built £40 million moulding plant with high tech wrapping and packing lines, the engineering and maintenance department has its hands full.

Solution

Cadbury recently installed Autopage's Email Gateway system to speed up site maintenance. Pete Ford, Messaging Infrastructure Manager for Cadbury Schweppes, says: " We're using the Autopage system in two ways - for managing site maintenance and for monitoring our computer-based reporting system.

"For site maintenance, we have a computer system which logs site management issues, such as a broken lift or a flood in the toilets. This links into Autopage which responds by sending a text message out to an engineer and detailing in the text where they should go and what they should do. The engineer then logs back into our system when the job is completed."

Mr Ford says that prior to installing the Gateway system, maintenance engineers would either have to be tracked down by phone or the problem put on hold until they called in themselves.
"We did have a messaging system in place but found only one in five messages was getting through, unlike with Autopage which is extremely stable and reliable."

The system is also used to monitor computer-generated reports. If a system within the factory fails, Gateway will generate an email that is sent by SMS to flag up the failure and alert the necessary staff. "Because it does it automatically, it saves staff having to log in over the weekend," Mr Ford says.

He has been very pleased with the way the system has bedded in since it was installed at the beginning of 2005. "We had some initial support from Autopage to start with, but once the system was in, it really just got on with the job. We're very pleased with it because its stability is very good and it is so reliable."
